Update: All Rite Aid stores close. CVS backs away from buying a Boise Rite Aid

Update (Monday, Oct. 6, 2025): All Rite Aid stores in the Boise area and elsewhere have closed, Rite Aid announced in a brief post on its website.

“All Rite Aid stores have now closed,” the statement said. “We thank our loyal customers for their many years of support.”

Below is the original story, published Aug. 22, 2025, under the headline, “CVS backs away from buying this Boise Rite Aid, where everything is now on sale.”

A year ago, Rite Aid had nine stores in Idaho. A year before that, it had 14. Now it has three. But those will soon be gone, too, as the drugstore chain ceases to exist nationwide.

Rite Aid’s remaining Idaho stores include two on State Street in Boise and one at the mall in Lewiston.

The store at 1515 W. State St. near downtown Boise was to have been sold to CVS Pharmacy as part of Rite Aid’s bankruptcy court-approved bidding process. CVS said in May that it would acquire and operate 64 Rite Aid stores in Idaho, Oregon and Washington.

But CVS has since backed out of buying the 1515 W. State St. store because of a dispute between Rite Aid and its landlord. Now, the space is in limbo.

The property owner, Denver-based State Street Partners LLC, filed an objection in late July in federal bankruptcy court in New Jersey to the transfer of the building’s lease to another company, such as CVS, during Rite Aid’s bankruptcy.

The landlord said a Rite Aid affiliate that leases the property from State Street Partners owes it over $168,000 for insurance, real estate taxes, legal fees, default interest and other expenses. It wants the court to make sure all debts are paid before the lease can go to a new tenant.

Rite Aid responded to that objection on Aug. 1, saying State Street Partners incorrectly claimed the lease will expire in a few months, rather than at the end of its current term in October 2030. Rite Aid said that, without confirmation that the lease runs until that date, “CVS has indicated it does not desire to take assignment of the lease.”

The store, which is kitty-corner to an Albertsons supermarket, was built by Safeway in 1950 with a Marina-style rounded roof. It is holding a store-closing sale now, with everything on sale. Many products on Friday were marked 20%-50% off. A sign at the front of the store said “total inventory blowout.”

Rite Aid’s other Boise store, at 7020 W. State St., is set to close, too. All remaining items are now 75% off.

Prescriptions at both stores are being transferred to the CVS store at 7402 W. Fairview Ave. in Boise, according to Rite Aid’s pharmacy transfer list.

CVS plans to buy the Rite Aid at 1904 19th Ave. in Lewiston, the Lewiston Tribune reported June 29. A CVS spokesperson said then that CVS planned for the Rite Aid to close Sept. 9 and for CVS to open there the next day.

Rite Aid did not respond Friday to a request for comment. Attempts to reach State Street Partners LLC for comment were unsuccessful. A spokesperson for CVS did not immediately respond to questions sent by email on Friday.
