Could Albertsons workers in Idaho get ‘significant’ wage increases? What we know
The union representing grocery workers at Albertsons stores in the Treasure Valley has reached a tentative agreement with the company after several bargaining sessions.
The deal would avoid a strike for hundreds of workers.
Local 555 of the United Food and Commercial Workers Union said in a post Monday that the settlement delivers significant wage increases and improved benefits for Albertsons employees in Idaho; Ontario, Oregon; and Jackson, Wyoming.
Members are expected to review the proposed contract in the next few weeks, ask questions and then vote on the offer, according to the post.
“This is a deal that is fully recommended by both sides,” Miles Eshaia, a spokesperson for the union, told the Idaho Statesman Wednesday by phone. “They wouldn’t be recommending it if it wasn’t a good deal.”
Miles said that the agreement will immediately take effect after a majority of members vote for it. He declined to share details about the wage increases and improved benefits.
The announcement struck a different tone from some of the bargaining updates earlier this summer. In late June, workers at Albertsons stores in the Boise and Nampa area voted overwhelmingly to authorize a strike, and the union accused the company of committing multiple unfair labor practices, including threatening to fire an employee involved in the negotiations, which Albertsons denied.
“We are pleased to have reached a fair and equitable tentative agreement with UFCW Local 555 that will benefit our associates and allow us to continue to serve our customers in Idaho,” a spokesperson for Albertsons told the Statesman by email.
The union has said previously that it has been pushing for retirement benefits and wage increases that match the rising cost of living in the Treasure Valley. Albertsons has 13 stores in Boise, four in Meridian, two in Nampa, two in Caldwell and one in Eagle, according to its store locator.
The union represents over 1,600 grocery workers at Albertsons stores in Idaho, a spokesperson previously told the Statesman.
