AT&T to acquire major fiber internet businesses in Idaho. What to know

One of the largest internet providers in Idaho is set to change hands.

AT&T announced Wednesday that it plans to acquire most of Lumen’s fiber internet business, which operates as CenturyLink and Quantum Fiber, for $5.75 billion, according to a news release. CenturyLink and Quantum Fiber operate in 11 states, including Idaho.

The deal is part of AT&T’s pledge to bring high-speed internet connectivity to millions more Americans.

“We’re leading the race to connect more Americans with fiber, the best broadband connectivity technology available,” AT&T CEO John Stankey said in the news release. “As we advance our fiber build, we’ll serve more communities with world-class connectivity and expect to roughly double where AT&T Fiber is available by the end of 2030.”

AT&T plans to reach about 60 million fiber locations by the end of the decade, according to the news release.

Lumen has about 1 million customers and 4 million locations, the release said. The transaction, which is pending regulatory approval from the U.S. Department of Justice and other closing conditions, is expected to close in early 2026.

A spokesperson for Lumen declined to say how many customers CenturyLink and Quantum Fiber have in Idaho. The spokesperson told the Idaho Statesman that the company considers that to be competitive information.
