Meet Rose Evans, the Idaho Statesman’s new reporter for Meridian, Eagle, Kuna and Star

Hi! My name is Rose, and I’m the Idaho Statesman’s new suburbs reporter. I joined the team in mid-September with the goal of expanding the Statesman’s coverage in Meridian, Eagle, Kuna and Star.

Since then, I’ve been working hard to keep readers in the area informed about local government, infrastructure and growth.

Now that I’ll be focusing on sharing your stories here in the Treasure Valley, I thought I might share a little bit about mine.

I came to the Statesman from the Boston area, where I was working in a restaurant and freelancing for a local paper. Before that, I was in school in Vermont studying creative writing, skiing the east and helping young athletes become leaders in their communities.

My passion for writing and helping people show up in the communities that matter to them brought me to journalism. My desire to challenge myself with a 2,700-mile leap of faith and grow under the guidance of smart, impact-driven journalists brought me to the Statesman.

I still can’t believe I get to write every day for a living, and I take incredibly seriously the responsibility and joy of getting to hear and share stories from the community. As a young journalist, I am constantly looking for ways to improve and better serve readers in the Treasure Valley.

In the Statesman’s newest role, I want readers in the fast-growing suburbs to get to know me and weigh in on what they want to read.

Some things that have surprised me about the valley so far:

The beauty: Put generously, the mountains of my home state just aren’t as … big. I, for one, am ready for the snow.

The warm welcome: Sure, I’m not from California, but still! People have gone out of their way to make me feel at home in a new place.

The rec sports: I just joined my third adult soccer team and counting. Email me if you need a sub!

The fact that everyone drives: My neighbor was shocked that I bought my first car here at 24 (her high school daughters just did the same). As the baby of my family, my older siblings are shocked that I beat them to it.

Whether I’m in the newsroom at the Statesman, talking to community members in Boise’s suburbs or biking past the Foothills to the Y, I know I’m lucky to be here.

If there’s anything you want me to know — whether it be ideas, tips or thoughts on how to improve my coverage — you can always email me at revans@idahostatesman.com.

You also can meet me and Editor Chadd Cripe in person from 4 to 6 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 13, at Lovejoy’s Ice Cream in Meridian. Enjoy a scoop of ice cream on us, and share your story ideas.
