Report shows wages up in Idaho’s Ada, Canyon counties. See how they compare with US

New data shows wages are up in the Treasure Valley.

The average Ada County resident took home a weekly wage of $1,142 from March 2021 to March 2022, according to a report released Thursday by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. That’s a 6.9% increase over the year before.

In Canyon County, weekly wages rose 9.7% on average to $828 during the same period.

Across the state, Idahoans saw their average wages reach $982 per week, an 8.5% increase.

All three wages are below the national average of $1,374.

Only one county in the state, Butte, was higher than the national average, at $1,830. Butte County typically has higher wages thanks to the Idaho National Laboratory, a nuclear research center based in southeastern Idaho.

This map illustrates Idaho’s average weekly wages by county for the first quarter of 2021, a year earlier than the latest wages reported Thursday. Butte County, seen in dark green, had the highest wages at $1,767 per week.

Wages in Boise County were the lowest in the state. The county, home to Idaho City and Horseshoe Bend, reported an average weekly wage of $556.

Nationwide, average weekly wages rose 6.7% to $1,374.

“Over-the-year wage changes for geographic areas may reflect shifts in the composition of employment by industry, occupation, and such other factors as hours of work,” the BLS report said. “Thus, wages may vary among counties, metropolitan areas, or states for reasons other than changes in the average wage level.”

What are Idahoans spending their money on?

The average household in Boise spends $1,898 per month on common household bills, according to a new report from Doxo, a bill-paying platform. That’s a 5.4% increase year over year.

It’s also about 6.8% higher than the state average of $1,777 and 5.2% lower than the national average $2,003.

Boise ranks as the fifth-most expensive city in Idaho for household bills. Here’s the breakdown:

The average Boise household spends $1,194 a month for a mortgage or $976 for rent, $420 for auto loans, $249 for utilities and $213 for health insurance, Doxo said.

The average monthly bills are $1,975 in Meridian, $1,765 in Nampa, $2,158 in Eagle, $1,815 in Garden City and $2,172 in Kuna.
