Boiseans are so accustomed to being told that their houses are more overvalued than any other city in the nation or that their rent is increasing at a rate comparable to cities twice the size of Boise.

But every once in a while, Idahoans get to keep more money in their wallets than those who live in other states, and here’s one of those times:

Doxo, an online app for paying bills and filing important paperwork, released its 2022 State Bill Pay Marker Report in June, which reports which states spend the most money on monthly household bills.

The report found that Idaho ranked 34th nationwide, averaging $1,777 per month on the 10 most common household bills. While that number may still seem high to some, it’s 11.3% lower than the national average of $2,003 per month.

The average U.S. household pays $24,032 on bills per year, according to the report. Idahoans spend about $21,316 annually. The study found that 89% of Americans are paying more monthly this year than last year, by about 6%.

Boiseans pay more than the state average. The report says Boise residents pay $1,898 on household bills, $121 higher than the state average. The price of bills in Boise saw a 5.4% increase from last year.

Hawaiians are paying the highest bills at $2,911 per month, 45.4% above the national average. Meanwhile, West Virginians are paying the least at $1,452 per month, 27.5% below the average.

The 10 most common household bills that Doxo identified are: mortgage, rent, auto loan, auto insurance, utilities (electric, gas, water & sewer, and waste & recycling), health insurance (consumer-paid portion), life insurance, cable and satellite, mobile phone, and alarm and security.
