J.C. Penney announces first wave of store closings. See how Idaho’s locations fared

Two J.C. Penney stores in the Treasure Valley survived the first round of closings announced by the onetime retail giant Thursday, three weeks after the department store declared bankruptcy.

Two stores in North Idaho, in Lewiston and Ponderay, weren’t as fortunate. They’re among the first 154 stores that will close permanently following liquidation sales.

The stores at the Boise Towne Square mall and in Nampa will continue operating, along with ones in Twin Falls, Pocatello, Idaho Falls and Coeur d’Alene.

Penney’s plans to close 242 of its 846 stores.

The announcement came as Penney’s has reopened many of its stores that were temporarily closed because of the coronavirus pandemic.

The stores in Boise and Nampa were among the first to reopen, on May 13. By Thursday, the company said it had reopened 500 stores.

The closings were announced in a filing late Thursday afternoon in U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Houston. Bankruptcy Judge David Jones still has to sign off on the plan, and a hearing is scheduled for June 11. If the proposal is approved, liquidation sales could begin immediately.

The sales are expected to last 10 to 16 weeks.
