The Shopko store on Fairview has sat vacant for nearly a year. Here’s what is going in

Craft store Hobby Lobby is set to open its first Boise store in the space vacated by Shopko at Fairview Avenue and Milwaukee Street.

The Oklahoma City company submitted an application Thursday to the city of Boise to remodel the 55,073-square-foot space at 8105 W. Fairview Ave.

In an email to the Idaho Statesman, Hobby Lobby said it plans to open the new store in early 2021.

Shopko, which operated there since the early 1980s before filing for bankruptcy, closed the store in March 2019. The Wisconsin company previously closed a Meridian store that reopened a year ago as Albertsons Market Street.

The two other Treasure Valley Shopko stores, on Broadway Avenue in Boise and in Nampa, also shut down last year, along with the company’s Boise warehouse.

Hobby Lobby operates more than 900 stores across the country, including five cities in Idaho: Meridian, Nampa, Twin Falls, Chubbock and Ammon.

The company plans to open 55 new stores this year and relocate 15 existing stores, reports Home Textiles Today, which covers the industry.

Hobby Lobby’s application did not specify how much money it plans to spend remodeling the store or when it hopes to open.

A spokesperson for the company did not immediately reply to a request for comment.

Hobby Lobby now operates two stores in the Treasure Valley, in Meridian and Nampa, and plans to open a a third in the former Shopko space at Fairview Avenue and Milwaukee Street. This Hobby Lobby is in Denver.
