Fans of Korean barbecue won’t have to wait much longer to grill their own bulgogi or galbi.

The Magnificent Garden restaurant is on track to open this fall, according to restaurant co-owner Danny Cheng and representatives of the building owner.

Cheng had planned to open the new restaurant, at 980 N. Milwaukee St., by late spring of this year. But there were some hold-ups with construction.

The building that previously housed Mickey Ray’s BBQ needed significant renovations, including a ventilation system that would allow the grills to vent down into the floor, instead of into hoods above the table.

“Once the juices hit the hot element, [smoke] just spews up into the air,” Cheng said of typical Korean BBQ setups. The new grills’ downward vent “sucks it down before it has the chance to get into your face and your hair and make you smell like barbecue the rest of the night.”

Cheng lives in Missouri but has already been involved in Boise’s restaurant scene. He helped his business partner open China Grand Buffet at Fairview Avenue and Five Mile Road years ago.

Magnificent Garden isn’t hiring yet, but plans to start soon, Cheng said.
