These are the winning numbers for Friday’s Mega Millions drawing worth nearly $1 billion
It’s time again to check those Mega Millions tickets carefully, because Friday’s estimated jackpot is worth $940 million to the lucky winner, the fifth-highest jackpot for the multistate game.
The winning numbers, drawn Friday, July 28, were 5, 10, 28, 52, 63; the Mega number was 18.
There was no grand prize winner in Tuesday’s Mega Million drawing and no tickets in California matched the five white balls without the Mega ball. No ticket has hit in 28 consecutive drawings and the jackpot has steadily climbed since April.
The odds of hitting the grand prize jackpot are 1 in 302,575,350.
The estimated $940 million jackpot, the eighth-highest jackpot in U.S. lottery history if won, would be worth $472.5 million in cash if taken in a lump sum, according to the California Lottery.
That lump sum would be less after taxes — 25% is withheld by lottery officials with the winner responsible for the rest. Most states also tax state winnings, though 15 states including California, Florida and Texas do not.
If someone draws the lucky numbers, Tuesday’s drawing would reset to $20 million.
Friday’s drawing comes less than 10 days after a Powerball ticket sold in Los Angeles with the matching six numbers worth $1.08 billion. No winner has been announced for that jackpot, which was the sixth-largest in U.S. history.
The largest U.S. jackpot was a $2.04 billion Powerball prize won in November 2022.
Powerball is played in 45 states, as well as Washington, D.C.; and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
State-run lotteries brought in roughly $95 billion in revenue in 2021, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.
Of that, about $64 billion was paid out in prizes and another $3.4 billion was used to run the programs. A little under $27 billion in revenue was left for states to fund various programs. In California, that allocation is set aside for education, and sales from the current run of Mega Millions draws has netted more than $65 million for California schools, according to lottery officials.
