Since he began making headlines a couple of years ago, Neil the seal has risen to stardom as one of the world's most famous animals. The massive elephant seal is only a few years old, but he's already gone viral more often than anyone can count. With an outgoing personality, a body built for destruction, and not a single care in the world, it's impossible for Neil not to leave his mark.

Why Does Neil the Seal Return to Tasmania? Why is he so determined to wreak havoc? Keep on reading and click the video below to see just what this massive seal is up to during his newsworthy return to Australia's mainland.

Sophie Whiting was just one of the dozens of lucky bystanders to witness Neil's famous (or perhaps infamous) tantrums with her own eyes on July 4. Everyone was all-smiles as the massive mammal wrestled with the road sign, but whoever will have to replace it on his behalf may not be so thrilled about it.

"Do they like… keep Neil in mind with budgeting for the year?" commenter @karmaorie asked. Not yet! The Natural Resources and Environment Department helps direct traffic and discourage onlookers from getting too close to the wild animal, but the Tasmanian government has not passed any legislation to help protect Neil or replace anything he's damaged.

As Neil continues to grow up, however, this may change! At 5-years-old, this elephant seal is only a teenager, and he'll be at least triple, if not quadruple, his current size when he's fully grown.

For now, he's sure enjoying the antics! Viewer @00amanita00 noticed, "he actually laughed when everyone cheered, which confirms what experts have been suspecting all along. He loves the interaction just as much as he loves the destruction!

Why Does Neil the Seal Return to Tasmania?

There's no question that Neil is one popular pinniped, but why does he seem so determined to wreak havoc on Tasmanian infrastructure? The seal returns to Tasmania twice a year during moulting season, and he chooses this area because it's where he was born.

As a 'teenager,' Neil also practices his socialization and fighting skills whenever he's on land. Normally, juveniles would play-fight and interact with one another, but because there are so few other elephant seals in the area, he often resorts to interacting with human or city infrastructure. He's just a bit lonely!

When he's older, he'll have to travel south to meet other elephant seals, especially females, but it's safe to say that everyone hopes he'll be a regular visitor for a long time.
