2-year-old Oregon boy dies from gunshot wound at Boise hospital

A 2-year-old boy in Baker City, Oregon, was fatally shot Sunday morning — and police were still investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident Monday, a police department spokesman told the Statesman.

The boy was flown to Saint Alphonsus Regional Medical Center in Boise, according to a release from the Ada County Coroner’s Office. The coroner identified the boy as Liam Mankins.

The boy’s cause of death was a single gunshot wound to the head, the coroner’s report says. The manner of his death remains under investigation.

Baker City is near the Oregon-Idaho border, about a two-hour drive west of Boise.

In a press release posted on Facebook Sunday, Baker City police said the shooting occurred around 11:15 a.m. at 1905 Birch St. The boy died at the Boise hospital about two and a half hours later.

The boy’s parents, Pete Mankins, 33, and Diana Goodman, 32, were at home at the time the boy was injured. The police department’s major crimes team is being assisted by the Oregon State Police Crime Lab, the release said.

A police department spokesman declined Monday to discuss any details of the investigation not already released to the public. A prosecutor in the Baker County District Attorney’s Office did not return a call for comment.
