Western Idaho Fair to change in 2027: days off, more weekends, earlier in summer
Times are changing at the Western Idaho Fair.
Or, more accurately, the times.
Reacting to what it says are the evolving needs of patrons, the Western Idaho Fair will unveil a new extended format at Expo Idaho — not next year, but in 2027. The fresh plan includes an early-August launch date, a longer three-weekend experience, and closures on Mondays and Tuesdays.
“We consistently hear from families who want the Fair to begin earlier in August, before the back-to-school rush begins,” Western Idaho Fair Director Bob Batista said in a press release. “Starting earlier and spreading the Fair across three weekends allows us to offer more opportunities for families to attend while still keeping the Fair experience they know and love.”
Normally opening on the third weekend of August, the fair will go on as planned in 2026 from Friday, Aug. 21, to Sunday, Aug. 30.
The transition to the new three-weekend format will take place over a two-year span.
In 2027, the fair will begin a week earlier, running Friday, Aug. 13, to Sunday, Aug. 29 — but closing Mondays and Tuesdays. Then in 2028, it will hop back yet another week to its official new timeline: Friday, Aug. 4, to Sunday, Aug. 20 — also closing Mondays and Tuesdays. The first Friday of August will continue to be the fair’s opening date in future years.
Drawing patrons from Boise and beyond, the Western Idaho Fair has been “celebrating agriculture in the Treasure Valley since 1897,” the release says. It is “a highlight of summer for hundreds of thousands of patrons, featuring 4-H/FFA and open class competitions, an array of entertainers and grounds acts, the thrilling Butler Carnival, dozens of Fair food stands, hundreds of vendors, and a popular ICCU Grandstand Concert Series.”
This year, the grandstand concerts alone pulled an average attendance of 10,660. That’s an increase from last year’s average of 9,860 and 8,825 the year before.
Rock band All-American Rejects set a new record by drawing a jaw-dropping 19,700 fans to its Thursday show.
