This Garden City winery, tasting room — owned by industry ‘black sheep’ — plans to close

One of the Boise area’s most unique wine purveyors will uncork its final bottle soon.

After 13 years, Potter Wines will close March 30, the Garden City operation announced on social media. Owned by married couple Von and Crystal Potter, the winery and tasting room is located at 5286 W. Chinden Blvd.

“We want to express our deepest gratitude to all who have supported us over the years,” Potter Wines wrote. “... Running a small business is not easy, but you made it FUN!”

Known for off-the-wall flavors such as jalapeno and chipotle wine — plus other “winey” concoctions — Potter Wines found a niche in a competitive local market for more than a decade.

“You get every reaction in the world,” Von, the winemaker, told the Idaho Statesman last year. “Some love it, some not so much. But even the ones that don’t love it admit that it’s kind of a neat little concept.”

Potter Wine’s unusual drinks liken the couple to the “black sheep” of the industry, Crystal told the Statesman.

The business is for sale, Potter Wines said in its goodbye announcement, “and we are eager to share more with the right buyer.

“In the meantime, the show goes on, and our March calendar is filled with events, live music and opportunities for you to join us as we say farewell. We will keep the wine flowing until then and we encourage you to stop in and stock up!”
