10 million albums sold, zero instruments. This group’s concert ‘will be big,’ Boise

Nampa’s Ford Idaho Center Amphitheater has booked another major concert certain to pack ’em in this summer.

But, this time, there won’t be a single musical instrument on stage.

Grammy-winning a cappella group Pentatonix will headline an outdoor show Thursday, Sept. 12. Tickets become available to the general public at 10 a.m. Friday for $49.50 to $179.50 (front row) through fordidahocenter.com. Live Nation and Idaho Center presales begin at 10 a.m. Wednesday. Special guests are expected to be added to the bill.

Formed in 2011, Pentatonix has evolved into a vocals-only phenomenon. The Texas-based quintet won season three of NBC’s “The Sing-Off.” Since then, it’s earned three Grammys and sold over 10 million albums worldwide. Pentatonix’s second holiday release, “That’s Christmas to Me,” was the fourth-best selling album in America in 2014 — of any genre.

Filling concert venues with rich, stunning harmonies, Pentatonix performances blend originals with familiar, crowd-pleasing cover songs. Last year, the group sold out arenas and amphitheaters with capacities in the 8,000 to 12,000 range, said Creston Thornton, president of promoter Live Nation’s mountain region.

Singing under an open sky in the Boise market?

Pentatonix “will be big here,” he predicted.
