Hitting ‘breaking point,’ this band canceled a major sold-out Boise concert. It’s back

Concert fans bewildered by a last-minute cancellation last year are in for another surprise.

This time, it’s a pleasant one.

In what amounts to an unofficial make-up date, Rainbow Kitten Surprise is scheduled to perform Tuesday, Sept. 19, at Outlaw Field in Boise. Tickets will become available to the general public at 10 a.m. Friday, April 14, at Ticketmaster.

Last July, the alternative-rock band axed its concert the day before the show at the same outdoor venue, along with all remaining tour dates through August. “As amazing as it has been singing and dancing with you every night,” vocalist Ela Melo explained to fans at the time, “the toll of life on the road has finally reached its breaking point.”

The show had sold out months in advance. General-admission entry for this late-summer gig will cost $49.50, or $44.50 for Idaho Botanical Garden members (who will be able to purchase tickets early). The opening act for the 7 p.m. concert will be indie-rockers Flipturn.

Founded in 2013 in North Carolina, Rainbow Kitten Surprise is known for its genre-hopping ability, and chameleon-like sonics on songs such as “Fever Pitch.” Its last performance in Boise was a sold-out gig in 2018 at the 999-capacity Knitting Factory. Before axing its Outlaw Field date last year, the band had headlined sold-out shows that same week at the iconic, 9,500-capacity Red Rocks Amphitheatre in Morrison, Colorado.

Outlaw Field at the Idaho Botanical Garden holds up to 4,000 fans.
