6 things to do this weekend in Boise: Grown-ups Halloween, Pray for Snow, 1/2-price pizza
Ah, Halloween weekend — the perfect time to scan the Ada County Sheriff’s Office website for the most entertaining arrest mugshots of the year.
(That time Alex from “A Clockwork Orange” was on there? Priceless.)
Either way, the holiday on Monday dominates this weekend’s event calendar.
If ghosts and goblins aren’t your trick-or-treat bag, you’ll also find a beer festival, the final day of a seasonal market and other worthy things going on Oct. 28-30.
1. Adult partying
Over 21? Here are some of the places to get wild in downtown Boise. (Just not too wild. See first sentence.)
▪ Does anyone love playing dress-up more than Hannah’s queen Rocci Johnson? (Hint: Not freakin’ likely!) She’ll lead the festivities Friday at the Haunted Hannah’s Zombie Prom. There will be cash and prizes for the top 10 costumes ($300 for best overall), drink specials, a photo booth and general madness. The Rocci Johnson Band will crank tunes starting at 10 p.m. Party kicks off at 7 p.m. Hannah’s is at 621 W. Main St., Boise. No cover.
Wait — you didn’t get enough Hannah’s? Or maybe just need some hair of the dog, er, werewolf? Starting at 5 p.m. Saturday night, it’s the Exotic Erotica Ball. This sequel will feature a “Come As You Aren’t” costume contest for over $1,000 in cash and prizes, music by The Rocci Johnson Band (10 p.m. to close), drink specials, games, souvenir photos on the “Blood Red Carpet,” and as always, more general madness. It starts at 5 p.m. No cover.
▪ Lots of revelers will bar-hop this weekend. Join other rowdies Saturday and make it official at the Halloween Bar Crawl. (More than 750 people are expected, organizers say.) For about $25 (or $20 in groups of four or more), you’ll get two drinks, pay no cover at participating bars, have access to drink and food specials, photographers, after-parties, a custom Halloween badge with vouchers and a costume contest with $1,000 top prize. Check-in goes from 4 to 6 p.m. at The Cactus Bar, 517 W. Main St. The party goes until midnight. Get tickets at Eventbrite.
What? There’s another bar crawl? Of course. The Creepy Crawl lets you roam between four downtown bars Saturday for one $25 wristband: Amsterdam Lounge, StrangeLove, Dirty Little Roddy’s and Karma. There will be costume contests and drink specials. If you show up at a venue between 8 and 9 p.m., you get in free. Crawl wristbands are sold at Eventbrite.
▪ Head to the second-floor Olympic, 1009 W. Main St., for Scaryfort on Friday. Live storytellers will spin three original horror tales while Cigarette Speedway provides music. The event runs from 7 to 9 p.m. Get tickets for $10 at Eventbrite, or pay $12 at the door.
▪ Goth-pop band Vision Video will headline a Halloween bash Saturday at Neurolux, 111 N. 11th St., that also features locals Blood Lemon and Floating Witch’s Head. Things get rolling around 8 p.m. for $12 advance at TicketWeb, or $15 at the door.
▪ Want to avoid the downtown scene? Try Garden City. If the Grateful Dead’s “lightning skull” is more your speed, go see tribute band Grateful. The local group will summon the spirit of Jerry Garcia and company — and host a Halloween costume contest. Festivities kick off at 9 p.m. Saturday at Visual Arts Collective, 3638 Osage St. It’s $20 at Eventbrite, or $25 at the door. .
2. Pray for Snow
With a few inches already piling at upper elevations, nobody needs to beg. But that won’t stop 10 Barrel Brewing from hosting its annual Pray for Snow street party from 5 to 10 p.m. Saturday in downtown Boise. There will be Music by Folk Hogan, StanAMonica and Lounge on Fire. You’ll also find a Halloween costume contest, giveaways, and free ski and board waxing. The party happens on 9th Street between West Bannock and West Jefferson streets. It’s free; you just have to buy your beers.
3. Hit the last market
This is it, shoppers. The Boise Farmers Market will host its final Saturday of the season this weekend. It runs from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at 1500 Shoreline Drive. (It’s also the final day of the Emmett Farmers Market.)
Fear not, though. The Capital City Public Market keeps running from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. every Saturday through Dec. 17 at The Grove Plaza at 8th and Main streets.
4. Eat a half-price slice
A new Johnny Bronx Pizza opened Monday at Ten Mile Crossing, aka Ten Mile and Franklin in Meridian. Serving authentic New York-style pies, it’s the second location for the growing Idaho brand. If you’re out and about at night, drop in for a beer, wine or canned cocktail — and happy-hour pizza. Slices are 50% off during the final hour of business each day. Johnny Bronx is open until 10 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays (closed Sundays).
5. Taste Downtown
Speaking of bargains? More than 50 food-and-drink businesses will offer $12 specials during the annual Taste of Downtown, which begins Friday and runs through Nov. 6. Organized by the Downtown Boise Association, the promotion is a way to sample food and drink from tons of different places through a “social-hour, prix-fixe menu,” according to the DBA. To see a list of participants, what they’re offering and specifically when, visit downtownboise.org/taste. One hot deal? Anzalone Pizza at The Warehouse Food Hall is selling its 12-inch Thai Curry pizza — normally $22.50 — for $12 from 5 p.m. to close for all 10 days.
6. Go country
Believe it or not, there’s a non-Halloween-themed concert in the Treasure Valley. Country singers Kathy Mattea and Suzy Bogguss are “Together At Last” at 7 p.m. Saturday inside Jewett Auditorium at The College of Idaho in Caldwell. Tickets are $30, $35 and $40 general admission, $20, $25, $30 for children. Purchase them at caldwellfinearts.org.
