Words & Deeds

Meridian restaurant closes for good, new one opens. Not trying it is a ‘missed steak.’

Boomer Godsill wasn’t entirely ready to unveil his new Meridian restaurant, Biscuit & Hogs, last weekend.

But Sunday, he relented. He opened the floodgates — er, patio — at 2032 E. Overland Road.

“We just had too many people coming,” Godsill explains. “So we opened it up and let them sit out there. Our patio this week, it’s already been doing really good.”

Biscuit & Hogs’ soft opening will be expanded to include interior seated dining Friday. But be warned: “We’re basically just waiting on the beer and wine license,” Godsill says. That should arrive by next week, he adds.

Taking over a former Original Sunrise Cafe location — shuttered in March because of the coronavirus — Biscuit & Hogs is a new brand for Godsill, who owns the local Sunrise Cafe all-day breakfast chain. That particular store was the newest in the Sunrise chain, Godsill says, and had operated for about 2 1/2 years.

“An American eatery” with a menu determined to “release your inner pig,” Biscuit & Hogs specializes in breakfast, burgers and beers. (When that license shows up). Oh, and melt-in-your-mouth bacon.

“It’s made for everybody and everyone,” Godsill told the Statesman in April. “I hate to say it’s brunch for men, but that’s kind of the feel of it. Big burgers, fatty food — but tastes damn good.”

Biscuit & Hogs made its debut several weeks ago as a takeout-and-delivery restaurant operating out of two Sunrise Cafe ghost kitchens. Delivery to Boise has been dropped now that the brick-and-mortar is open. Delivery and takeout in Meridian is still available.

Biscuit & Hogs has worked up appetites on social media with photos of mouthwatering burgers and sandwiches. A post of the Prime Steak Sandwich informs folks that “Not ordering this for dinner would be a huge missed steak.”

Based on comments online, folks are hungry. And although social distancing has made dining out feel different, Godsill is excited to show off the former Sunrise Cafe’s new, beefier atmosphere.

Biscuit & Hogs is no pigpen.

“I wish I had some pictures of what it was before,” Godsill says. “We’ve done a lot of work. It’s had a complete face-lift.”
