Eagle makes liquor sales legal on Sundays and holidays. Except this one day.

Cheers, weekend imbibers: Sunday cocktails finally will be legal in Eagle.

An ordinance loosening restrictions on liquor passed at Tuesday night’s Eagle City Council meeting. Under amended guidelines, licensed businesses now will be within the boundaries of local law when they sell alcohol on Sundays.

For years, restaurants, bars and golf courses violated city rules, often unknowingly, by serving liquor by the drink on Sundays. The code, which also banned sales on certain holidays, was not enforced, Mayor Jason Pierce told the Statesman earlier this week. The language was “outdated,” he said.

The new ordinance also allows businesses to sell liquor on Memorial Day and Thanksgiving.

But Christmas? Nope. That remains illegal. Although it originally was planned as part of Eagle’s code revision, Idaho statute does not allow it.

State liquor stores are not allowed to operate on Christmas, either — or on Memorial Day or Thanksgiving.
