5 Things to Do This Weekend in Boise: See Cirque du Soleil, get ‘Kicked in the Teeth’

1. Go see ‘Ovo’

Cirque du Soleil last visited Idaho in 2012, when it rolled into Boise with 18 semi-trailers for a seven-show run of “Dralion.” Now the contemporary circus company is back with a new, high-flying spectacle: “Ovo” (which means “egg” in Portuguese).

Seven eye-popping performances happen today through Sunday at ExtraMile Arena. The cast includes 52 performers from 14 countries. Acrobatic feats range from foot juggling and contortion to slackwire and aerial straps. A signature final act combines trampoline stunts, tumbling and rock climbing.

Tickets are available starting at $39. Family four-packs are available, too.

2. Support the Steelheads

The Idaho Steelheads hockey squad is back for the attack at 7:10 p.m. Friday and Saturday at CenturyLink Arena, 233 S. Capitol Blvd. The opponent? The Utah Grizzlies. Tickets are $12-$40.

(Incidentally, yes, that was my 11-year-old son helping his friend sell salmon socks at last weekend’s Steelies game. Buy a pair! Save Lonesome Larry! It’s a great cause, Idaho!)

3. Hit a concert

The concert calendar? A bit slow this weekend. Here are the two main touring acts:

Here’s the full scoop on all-female AC/DC cover band Helle’s Belles, one of the best “tribs” in the world. (They don’t call me Dirty Deeds for nothin’. ) This Seattle group is going to shred through two entire AC/DC albums at their Boise show: “Powerage” and “Back in Black.”

(Trivia question: What’s the final song on “Powerage”?)

The concert starts at 8 p.m. Friday at the Knitting Factory, 416 S. 9th St., Boise. Tickets are $18 general ($20 door), at TicketWeb.

(Answer: “Kicked in the Teeth.”)

Guess who else is back — and often in black? Lyle Lovett. He’ll bring his Acoustic Group to the Morrison Center on Friday for an 8 p.m. show. Tickets are $37.50-$50 at Ticketmaster.

4. Hang with the kids

What exactly will you get at the Kid’s Fair, which runs from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday at Expo Idaho? A reasonable price tag, for one: $5 general admission, $4 kids 3-12, free for ages 2 and younger.

Beyond that, you’ll find a huge expo building packed with booths and vendors offering interactive activities to keep the rugrats moving: “Choose from a variety of bounce houses” ... “be a superhero for a day, or your favorite animal when you get your face painted” ... “touch a boa constrictor, hold a baby lizard and feed an old grumpy turtle” ... or check out stage performances: “Magic show, taekwondo, clowns, dance ... .”

5. Get wild on Leap Day

Zoo Boise is all about Feb. 29. If you dress up as an animal that “leaps” on Saturday, you’ll get a discounted admission price: $4.25 general, $3 child 3-11. You can play cornhole with BSU student-athletes, tackle an obstacle course built by St. Luke’s, and experience wildlife challenges and games with staff. The zoo will be open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., with last admission at 4:30 p.m.
