Four sisters bring taste of Afghanistan to Boise. Their cafe’s grand opening is this week.
Prepare your palate: Pistachio baklava and green cardamom tea are here.
Sunshine Spice Bakery & Cafe — a collaboration from four Afghan-born sisters — will hold its grand opening from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday at 6911 W. Fairview Ave. The first 20 customers will receive a gift card. The space, which has been remodeled and completely transformed, formerly held Daylight Donuts.
Opening the eatery is a sibling-powered achievement for the Shams sisters — Homeyra, Bahar, Narges and Khatera. Their family came to Boise in 2003.
“We’re very excited,” Homeyra told the Idaho Statesman recently. “It’s been a dream for us for a very long time, and we’re all four sisters working together.”
The small restaurant sells Afghan/American fusion baked treats, coffee and tea in an art-driven atmosphere. Bahar and Khatera have generated the food; Homeyra and Narges create art, whether it’s a mural or traditional artwork. Work from local artists also decorates the walls.
Customers are free to relax and enjoy a pastry, or just grab something to go.
The menu includes plenty of tantalizing options. More than a dozen pastries are available, ranging from honey-syrup-powered Pistachio Baklava ($3.50) and a gorgeous Turkish Bagel ($1.50) to a Jam Danish ($2.75) or Vanilla Coconut Cookie ($1.25) with a hint of lemon. There’s also Afghan Bread ($1.75) and Cheese Bread ($1.50).
Choose from an array of coffees and teas. Enjoy an Americano ($2.25-$3.25), Espresso ($1.75-$3.75) or Mocha ($3.45-$4.65). Or jazz things up with Turkish Coffee ($2.50-$4.45), Saffron Tea ($3.75-$4.45) or Pink Tea with Clotted Cream ($3-$4).
Artwork on display is for sale; 25 percent of earnings will be donated to the Agency for New Americans, which helps recently arrived refugees with financial needs. Eagle painter Rich Summers is the current featured artist.
