When it comes to serving healthy meals, restaurants sometimes face groans.

After all, who wants to pay for rabbit food?

But the name of Cafe Yumm! says it all. In 12 years of franchising, the Eugene-based chain has expanded to 23 locations, mostly in Oregon, also in Washington — and now in Southwest Idaho.

Cranking out customizable rice-and-bean bowls, the Boise area’s newest restaurant opened Tuesday in Eagle at 2826 S. Eagle Road. It’s in the Bridges at Lakemoor shopping center just north of Chinden Boulevard.

More than 50 percent of the ingredients are certified organic. The rest are good for you, too. (Well, mostly.) The menu lures health-conscious customers with lots of reassuring options, including soups, salads and wraps.

But it’s the bowls ($6.45 small/$7.45 medium/$8.45 large) that create excitement. The Original comes with organic brown rice, organic black beans, organic salsa, plus a variety of fresh toppings. Meanwhile, the Original Yumm Sauce sends fans into a tizzy. It “pulls everything together in flavorful harmony,” according to The Oregonian. They jar the stuff and sell it at grocery stores.

You can opt for extras in a bowl such as chicken breast or organic tofu. You’ll also find gluten-free, vegetarian and vegan suggestions. It’s part of a build-your-own dining experience that “nourishes body, mind and soul.”

Want to be naughty? Treat yourself to an adult beverage. Cafe Yumm! in Eagle carries four wines by the glass. There also are four canned beers from Nampa’s excellent Mother Earth Brew Co. (Wait, studies show that one glass of beer or wine is actually good for you, right?)

Or be a lot naughtier. Along with juices, teas and coffee, Cafe Yumm! sells fountain drinks. Yes, Coke! Use it to chase a chocolate-dipped cookie ($3.25) — made with organic whole wheat flour and organic eggs, naturally.

In addition to inviting indoor seating, Cafe Yumm has outdoor tables, a fire pit and a drive-thru. It’s open from 10:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. seven days a week. The restaurant is testing a kids menu, and a catering menu is planned for later this year.

The Eagle restaurant is the first of multiple Boise-area locations targeted by franchisee Rebecca Blewett.

“While living in Oregon, I was a busy single mom,” she said in a press release. “Café Yumm! became an important part of my family’s regular routine. The amazing Yumm! Sauce, friendly service, and convenience made taking my kids out for a nutritious meal fun and easy. We all craved it! When I moved to Idaho, I knew the community would love Café Yumm! too, and I’m thrilled to bring the restaurant to Eagle.”
