The Boise State men’s basketball team will have to wait to play No. 20 Colorado State.

Because of continued COVID-19-related concerns within the Broncos’ program, their game against the Rams this week has been postponed, according to the Mountain West. The contest was scheduled for 8:30 p.m. Friday at ExtraMile Arena.

If the game can’t be rescheduled, it will be declared a no contest.

Boise State Athletic Director Jeramiah Dickey released a statement on social media Wednesday night regarding the Broncos’ COVID-19 issues.

“We continue to test daily and anticipate returning to organized team activity Friday with the members of the program who have cleared protocols at that point. The earliest the minimum number of student-athletes and coaches would be eligible to return to competition is Sunday,” the Twitter statement reads, in part.

“With the uncertainty that still exists, we fully support the Mountain West’s decision to shuffle the schedule in the best interest of our conference. Our attention remains focused on following the protocols in place to ensure our team is healthy.”

The Nevada men’s basketball team, which is also in the midst of a COVID-19 pause, had its game Saturday at San Diego State postponed, so the Mountain West adjusted the schedule. The Aztecs will now host Colorado State on Saturday at 2 p.m. Mountain time on CBS. The game was originally scheduled for Tuesday, March 1.

The Broncos’ games at Wyoming last Saturday and Utah State on Tuesday were postponed after members of Boise State’s travel party began exhibiting symptoms of COVID-19 while in Laramie, Wyoming, for their New Year’s Day game. Based on guidance from the university and Central District Health, the entire travel party had to be quarantined upon returning to Boise.

“Per protocols, we tested all members of our travel party which revealed additional cases. Those who tested negative flew home as previously scheduled. Those who tested positive were isolated and separate transportation/travel was coordinated,” Dickey said. “Following the guidance of university and local health officials, all student-athletes, coaches and staff who were members of the travel party entered quarantine upon returning to Boise.”

A combined 20 Mountain West men’s and women’s basketball games have been postponed in recent weeks because of COVID-19, leaving the conference with a massive scheduling issue as the season progresses.

Mountain West teams that have experienced a COVID-19 pause this season include the San Jose State women, Fresno State women, Wyoming women, Nevada women, Colorado State men, San Jose State men, Fresno State men, Boise State men, Wyoming men, UNLV men and Nevada men.

The Boise State women’s team saw its game scheduled for Monday at Wyoming postponed as well as its Thursday contest at Nevada. The BSU women were already in Reno when the 7:30 p.m. game was called off Thursday afternoon.

In order for a league game to be played, a minimum of seven players and one coach must be available.

The Boise State men are scheduled to face Nevada, which is also on a COVID pause, on Wednesday, Jan. 12, at 8:30 p.m. in Reno.

Boise State’s Public Health office and Central District Health have adopted the CDC’s recommendations for quarantine and isolation. A positive test, regardless of vaccination status, requires five days of isolation. Individuals who have no symptoms or improved symptoms after five days will be cleared to end isolation, but they must continue to wear a surgical mask around others for five additional days.

For individuals with a known exposure, the protocol is dependent on vaccination status and whether or not they are symptomatic. Individuals who are symptomatic and completed a Pfizer or Moderna vaccination series within the past six months (or last two months for Johnson & Johnson) or who are boosted must get tested. If negative, the individual must wear a surgical mask around others for 10 days and get tested on Day 5. Positive individuals follow the positive test protocols.

Asymptomatic individuals who are boosted or completed a vaccination series within the past six months are required to wear a surgical mask around others for 10 days and test on Day 5.

Symptomatic individuals who are unvaccinated, or were fully vaccinated more than six months ago and not boosted, must get tested and stay home until results are received. Positive individuals follow the positive test protocols. Asymptomatic individuals who are unvaccinated, or were fully vaccinated more than six months ago and not boosted, must stay home for five days, get tested on Day 5 and continue to wear a surgical mask around others for five additional days.
