Featured letter: Rude bicyclists ruin Boise Greenbelt experience

My wife and I recently took a 20-minute walk on the Greenbelt from our home to the Garden City Library. I kept track of the bicyclists who passed us on our left side as we walked side by side on the Greenbelt.

There were 12 bicyclists who passed us and only two of the bicyclists were courteous enough to announce “On Your Left” prior to passing. The other 10 bicyclists sped by us without a warning or concern for pedestrian safety. Based on my brief survey, 83 percent of the bicyclists do not notify pedestrians when they are passing on the Greenbelt.

Signage on the Greenbelt clearly states “Bicyclists Must Yield To Pedestrians.” Sooner or later a bicyclist will collide with a pedestrian resulting in personal injury and/or litigation. This can be avoided if bicyclists will be courteous by announcing (verbal-bell-horn) their presence on the Greenbelt when passing pedestrians.
