Travelin Man leads field of nine for Derby Trial

Swale Stakes winner Travelin Man tops a field of nine 3-year-olds entered for the Grade III Cliff's Edge Derby Trial on Saturday, opening night of Churchill Downs' Spring Meet.

Trained by Todd Pletcher, the 7-5 favorite has won two of three starts. Before his victory as the odds-on favorite in the Grade II Swale, Travelin Man ran second in the Grade II Hutcheson, both at Gulfstream Park.

Pletcher is sticking with jockey John Velazquez, who has been aboard Travelin Man in all of his starts. The son of Trippi will break from post position two and carry highweight of 121 pounds.

Another graded-stakes winner in the field is 7-2 second choice J J's Lucky Train, winner of the Grade III Bay Shore at Aqueduct on April 9 in his most recent start. J J's Lucky Train has won five of eight career starts and will be ridden Saturday by Jose Ferrer.

Garrett Gomez will ride Indiano (9-2), a three-time group stakes winner in Panama, where he was undefeated in five starts. Indiano has two runner-up finishes in the United States, including to Travelin Man in the Swale.

First post for Saturday night's 11-race program is at 6 p.m., with the $200,000, 1-mile Derby Trial at 9:39 p.m.

The most recent Derby Trial participant to come back the following week in the Kentucky Derby was Don't Get Mad in 2005. He won the Trial and ran fourth behind Giacomo in the Derby.
