GIRLS BASKETBALL

Mandy Simpson, Boise: The junior forward helped the Braves pick up three wins in the 5A Southern Idaho Conference while recording her fifth consecutive double-double. In three games, Simpson racked up 48 points, 37 rebounds and 11 assists in victories over Meridian (17 points, 15 rebounds, 3 assists), Columbia (10 points, 12 rebounds, 2 assists) and Rocky Mountain (21 points, 10 rebounds, 6 assists).

Nick Fitts, Melba: The junior guard guided the Mustangs to a 2-1 record last week in nonconference games against Fruitland, Liberty Charter and Homedale. Fitts scored a total of 70 points, highlighted by 28 points — including five made 3-pointers — and nine assists in a 60-57 victory over Homedale. Fitts made 13 3-pointers in three games.

WRESTLING

Irving Capuchino, Caldwell: The Cougars won the 32-team Buck’s Bags Duals over the weekend, and Capuchino went 6-0 in those duals at 160 pounds. Capuchino was the 4A state runner-up at 145 pounds last season, and he returns for his senior year hoping to help the Cougars repeat as team champions.

Joe Martarano, who left the Boise State football team last year to pursue professional baseball with the Chicago Cubs, was released by the team last month. He hopes to play for a Major League Baseball team, but is also pondering a return to college football.
