Varsity Extra athletes of the week (Dec. 8-13)

Mandy Simpson, Boise: The Braves improved to 6-1 overall and 5-1 in the 5A Southern Idaho Conference with two victories last week. In a 61-33 win over Borah, Simpson contributed 22 points, nine rebounds, three assists and three steals. The sophomore post then had a double-double of 18 points and 13 rebounds in a 58-34 win against Vallivue.


Jake Johnson, Kuna: The Kavemen picked up two victories last week, beating nonconference foe Fruitland 58-45 and 4A Southern Idaho Conference rival Bishop Kelly 73-66. Johnson, a 6-foot-6 junior guard/forward, finished the week with eight 3-pointers. Against Fruitland, Johnson had 18 points, three rebounds and one assist, including going 8-for-12 overall from the field and 2-for-3 from 3-point range. Johnson then posted 29 points, five rebounds and two assists against BK. He shot 9-of-12 from the field and 6-for-8 from 3-point range.


Max Miller, Rocky Mountain: The Grizzlies defeated Borah 54-30 and Timberline 69-12 in a pair of duals last week. Against Borah, Miller, a sophomore, earned a 10-3 decision over Shea Randall at 132 pounds. Randall is the reigning 5A state champion at 106 pounds. Miller received a win by forfeit against Timberline.
