FOOTBALL

Josh Eden, Capital: The Eagles beat Rocky Mountain 27-14 in the 5A state semifinals at Dona Larsen Park, punching a ticket to state for the first time since 2009. Eden, a senior linebacker, helped Capital hold the Grizzlies scoreless in the second half, including forcing a fumble and recovering it late in the fourth quarter to ice the win.

Keenan Pattwell, Mountain View: The Mavericks topped Eagle 25-15 to advance to the 5A state championship game for the third season in a row. Pattwell, a senior running back/wide receiver, caught seven passes for 122 yards and two touchdowns despite sitting out practice earlier in the week.

Phoenix Ruffin, Fruitland: The Grizzlies returned to the 3A state championship game for the 10th time in 11 seasons with a 45-33 victory against Gooding. Ruffin, a senior running back, had 31 carries for 243 yards and two touchdowns, accounting for more than half of the Grizzlies’ 379 rushing yards.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Mandy Simpson, Boise: The senior small forward who signed with Oklahoma last week opened the 2016-17 season with a 57-54 win over Bishop Kelly. Simpson scored a game-high 22 points, including going 2-for-3 from 3-point range, with six rebounds, five steals and two assists.
