Varsity Extra football roundup (Saturday, Aug. 29): Bishop Kelly wins first game of 4A title defense

Two-time defending 4A state champion Bishop Kelly opened the season with a dominant victory, holding Bishop Manogue (Nev.) to just 113 yards of total offense in a 28-0 nonconference win Saturday at Nick Ysursa Field.

It was Bishop Kelly's first shutout since October 2013.

Sophomore Rex Irby ran for 72 yards and two touchdowns on eight carries as the Knights racked up 323 yards on the ground. Tailback Ivan Torrez led BK with 99 yards rushing, Luke Burley had 78 yards and Jake Jorgensen added 70 more yards on seven carries. Burley and Jorgensen each scored touchdowns in the fourth quarter.

RIVERTON (UTAH) 61, SKYVIEW 25

The Hawks found themselves in a 27-0 hole midway through the second quarter and couldn't battle their way back at Holt Arena. Quarterback Jacob Hibbard connected with Kyle Pierce for two touchdowns. Hibbard finished 17-of-28 for 136 yards. Running back Cody Ghighina ran for 143 yards on 13 carries, including an 80-yard touchdown. Pierce also finished with 143 yards on eight catches.
