3A Snake River Valley football preview

EMMETT HUSKIES

The Huskies made history during last year’s run to the semifinals, reaching the playoffs for the first time since 1997 and winning a playoff game for the first time since ’95. Emmett returns loaded for another playoff run with seven offensive starters back, including senior running back Mason Farnsworth (784 yards, 14 TDs), first-team all-conference quarterback Saige Wilkerson and jack-of-all-trades Yancy Hyde. “Anything short of the semifinals would be disappointing,” coach Mike Schroeder said.

FRUITLAND GRIZZLIES

Fruitland returns its top three running backs — Kennon Smith (second-team All-Idaho), Garrett Tipton and Rocko Mackenzie — as it guns for a 10th straight state title berth. Coach Ryan Tracy said the Grizzlies will need to mature up front. But they can build around 6-5, 235-pound tight end Tyler Eiguren. The first-team All-Idaho pick at TE (114 yards, 7 TDs) and DL (7 sacks) doesn’t have any offers yet. But he’s drawn interest from Boise State, Washington State, Oregon, BYU and Duke, Tracy said.

HOMEDALE TROJANS

A state semifinalist two years ago and a quarterfinalist last year, Homedale returns an enviable amount of talent and experience. Senior quarterback Lawsen Matteson already has 4,596 yards, 50 TDs and two first-team All-Idaho selections to his name. He and first-team all-conference running back Josh Tolmie are two of nine starters back on offense. And 10 starters return on defense after the program only graduated eight seniors.

PARMA PANTHERS

Parma returns its top offensive weapon from last season — running back Jimmy Dawson — a second-team All-Idaho pick who ran for nearly 1,200 yards. He also factors into the passing game, returns kicks and racked up 65 tackles at linebacker. Coach Jake Walgamott said Dawson and quarterback Payton Pinz will feature heavily in the Panthers’ veer attack. And with five starters back on defense, a unit that gave up 36.1 points per game should improve.

PAYETTE PIRATES

Boise State Hall of Fame linebacker Carl Keever takes over the Pirates after they went 2-7 last year and 1-7 in 2013. Joining the former McCall-Donnelly head coach are eight returning starters on offense and seven on defense. Senior Johnny Herrera (5-10, 170 pounds) leads the group as a three-year starter who’s seen time at quarterback, wide receiver and corner. But Keever said he’ll settle at receiver and defensive back.

WEISER WOLVERINES

Weiser missed the playoffs last season for the second year in a row, going 0-5 in conference play. The Wolverines only return four starters on offense and three on defense. But depth along the offensive and defensive lines could pave the way for a return to form and allow quarterback Matt Pritchard, a second-team all-conference pick last season, more time to operate. “(Our) depth has improved, but the proof is in the pudding,” coach John Srholec said.
