1A Division I football preview

GREENLEAF GRIZZLIES

Greenleaf returns only two players from a 2014 season that saw the Grizzlies’ lone victory come due to a forfeit vs. Sho-Ban. Roughly two-thirds of the team will be freshmen or players new to football. But first-year coach Jeff Metcalf said the team has some new, faster players out this year. Senior Cade Metcalf, who led the team in receiving yards and touchdowns last season as a tight end, takes over at quarterback. “Cade worked his tail off over this past offseason to physically prepare his body for the grind of playing literally every down of every game for this upcoming season,” Metcalf said.

HORSESHOE BEND MUSTANGS

After graduating quarterback Manny Sancho, the conference’s offensive player of the year, coach Jesse Goff said his team will return to its more traditional sets and focus on running the ball. Sophomore Gavin Miller steps in under center, and while Goff said he’s just as good a passer as Sancho, few have the athletic ability to carry an offense all alone. “He’s cool, calm and collected in the pocket,” Goff said. Senior receivers and twins Kyle and Kory Jones stand as Miller’s top targets. And 5-4 junior Dalton Lowe will take the bulk of the carries. Goff said Lowe should surprise some opponents this year.

IDAHO CITY WILDCATS

Jason Roeber, Idaho City’s coach from 1999-2002, returns to replace Sean Porter, last year’s conference coach of the year. He inherits an offense that will break in new QB Wesley Pierce and two new running backs in Curtis Sharp and Cody Gilbert. Sharp shifts into the backfield at fullback from a blocking role at end to replace Nate Tavernier, a first-team all-league back now at Idaho State. He’ll also lead the defense as an end and a returning two-way starter. “Curtis has been working hard in the offseason and will be looking to lead the defense as they face some strong competition this year,” Roeber said.

NOTUS PIRATES

The Pirates remain young, possibly starting only one senior. But they also return plenty of experience with five starters on offense and six on defense returning, both tops in the league. Coach Sam Crockett said his team will feature a potent backfield with juniors Brandon Patrick and Eryck Peterson. But speedy sophomore Caleb Zimmerman could become the one who keeps opposing coaches up at night. “At the (Eastern Oregon) camp, he had the college coaches’ heads turning,” Crockett said. Linebacker Kobe Zimmerman leads the defense, a unit Crockett feels will be a strength of the team.

RIMROCK RAIDERS

Rimrock’s season is already in jeopardy. The Raiders started fall practice with eight players and were down to six this week, leading to the cancellation of the scheduled season opener at Garden Valley. The remaining roster is heavy with freshmen, including quarterback Todd Marvin, who led the junior high team to an undefeated season last year. Sophomore halfback/linebacker Rigo Lino will line up alongside Marvin as one of the top returning weapons from last season. Junior fullback/linebacker Nick Bennett is out for the season after a four-wheeler accident.
