The first round starts Thursday with Idaho crowning its state champions Saturday.
This marks the first year of a new state championship format. Only four teams advanced to the state playoffs, and they’ll need to battle through a new double-elimination tournament before hoisting a trophy.

Idaho is experimenting with a new way to crown its state champions.
Baseball teams first had to qualify for the regional tournaments. Only the four winners of those regional tournaments advanced to state.
The new format gave more teams a shot to qualify for state. It also de-emphasized the district tournaments while adding more weight to regular-season success via at-large berths to regionals.
Winners of the district tournaments automatically advanced to regionals but did not get a guaranteed berth at state.
