The U-17 Boise Nationals boys soccer team edged Greater Seattle Surf 7-6 in the ninth round of penalty kicks Friday to advance to the semifinals of the Far West Regional tournament in Seattle.
Boise trailed 1-0 until Andres Sanchez (Ontario High) netted the equalizer in the 85th minute. In the ninth round of sudden death penalty kicks, Andrew Palmer (Borah) made a kick save, and then Sami Marquez (Boise) buried the game winner.
Boise, which is 4-0-0 at the tournament, faces Seattle United at 9 a.m. Mountain time Saturday in the semifinals. Only one team in Idaho history, the FC Nova-Nationals U-19 girls in 2015, has ever won a Far West title.
In the girls tournament, FC Nova’s U-16 team saw its run end with a 2-0 loss to Utah’s Celtic FC.
