Fullback Jace Malek of West Valley High in Spokane signed with Idaho in February shortly after being diagnosed with stage IV osteosarcoma, a type of bone cancer.
Coach Paul Petrino said the Vandals would honor Malek’s scholarship even if he couldn’t play. “Our thoughts and prayers are with Jace and his family. He always will be a member of our Vandal family,’’ Petrino said in a statement released Thursday night.
According to a Facebook page created to update friends and family about Malek’s status, he underwent surgery Tuesday in Seattle to remove a tumor in his hip. The process required amputation of Malek’s right leg.
“Amputation is done. He lost 1/3 of his blood but is stable. ... A good recovery is expected,” the most recent Facebook post says.
