Boise State receivers coach Junior Adams discusses his group and what he hopes to see this fall Aug. 15, 2016.

The Boise State football team isn’t lacking options at receiver this fall, but the question is who will separate themselves from the pack. Seniors Thomas Sperbeck and Chaz Anderson, along with junior Cedrick Wilson, seem to be set as the starting trio, with a handful of players with a little game experience vying for time behind them.

“We play six or seven guys a game, so pretty much everyone’s interchangable,” receivers coach Junior Adams said.

Sophomores A.J. Richardson, Akilian Butler and Sean Modster, junior Austin Cottrell and redshirt freshman Bryan Jefferson are among those candidates to join the mix. The four that played last season combined for just 16 receptions.

“That second tier of guys, we expect them to push the first tier, those guys that are starters right now,” Adams said.

The group has embraced the competition, with some confidence knowing they’ll have strength in numbers.

“We’ve been having a ball, a lot of fun out there,” Adams said. “... we’re not where we want to be yet, but we’re making strides.”

More from Adams...

On Butler: “The next step for Akilian is to really get the system under his belt. Playing him at a young age as a true freshman, we saw that he has the skillset to play.”

On Modster: “Sean has matured a lot. To me, we saw Sean take off in that spring game, he had those two touchdowns. Ever since then, he’s been playing pretty consistent for us, making plays every day.”

On Cottrell: “Austin’s a big, physical kid that can run. In our last scrimmage, he went up and made a good play on the goal line and he’s made plays in practice.”

On second group: “They all come in every day upbeat, having fun, open ears, open heart, ready to learn.”
