Boise State football placed both sophomore quarterback Brett Rypien and junior running back Jeremy McNichols on the preseason Maxwell Award watchlist Tuesday.
Ninety players from the Football Bowl Subdivision dot the list, and Boise State was one of 23 schools that had at least two players on it. The Maxwell Award is handed to the top player in college football, regardless of position. Alabama running back Derrick Henry won it last year. Semifinalists will be named Oct. 31, with three finalists chosen Nov. 21.
Rypien was named first-team all-Mountain West last season after throwing for 3,353 yards and 20 touchdowns in 11 games as a true freshman. McNichols ran for 1,337 yards and caught 51 passes, scoring 26 total touchdowns, which were second in the nation. They are the only Mountain West tandem on the list.
Check out the full watchlist here. Some Boise State 2016 opponents appear: Washington State receiver Gabe Marks, Washington State quarterback Luke Falk, BYU quarterback Taysom Hill, Wyoming running back Brian Hill and Air Force running back Jacobi Owens.
