Boise State is in the process of hiring former cornerback Gabe Franklin to fill the vacant defensive staff position, a source told the Idaho Statesman on Wednesday.
Franklin has been a defensive backs coach at UTEP for the past five seasons.
He was the cornerbacks coach at San Diego in 2010 and a defensive administrative assistant at Cal in 2008-09. He was a high school coach in 2007.
Franklin made the All-WAC first team in 2004. He finished his career with 18 interceptions.

Franklin joins defensive line coach Steve Caldwell, defensive coordinator/linebackers coach Andy Avalos and defensive backs coach Ashley Ambrose on the defensive staff. Franklin likely will coach safeties. Coach Bryan Harsin, who can’t comment on the hiring until it’s completed, confirmed that the new hire would work with Ambrose in the secondary.
