Bronco Beat

Boise State football gains support in Top 25 polls

The Boise State football team has started to build support in Top 25 voting again, providing some hope that the Broncos could return to the polls before the season ends.

The Broncos received six points in The Associated Press Top 25 on Sunday — tying for fourth among others receiving votes. They received nine points in the Amway Coaches Poll, which was ninth among others receiving votes.

Boise State (7-2) has been out of the Top 25 since its loss to Utah State on Oct. 16. The Broncos received 11 total points between the two polls last week.

The Broncos are back in control of their destiny in the Mountain West but remain a long shot to reach a New Year’s Six bowl game. The American conference has four Top 25 teams.

The more important rankings right now for the Broncos are the computer rankings. If the two Mountain West division winners aren’t ranked in the College Football Playoff top 25, then the host will be determined by computer rankings. Boise State has held a comfortable lead over West leader San Diego State, even though the Aztecs are undefeated in conference play. This week, for example, Boise State is No. 26 in the Sagarin Ratings and San Diego State is No. 60.

If Boise State beats New Mexico this week and Air Force beats Utah State, the Mountain Division champion will be determined by the Boise State-Air Force game Nov. 20 in Boise.
