It was a sweet and sour morning for Boise State football fans on USA Today’s website Wednesday.
Paul Myerberg, who does a weekly ranking of every Football Bowl Subdivision team all season, started Boise State at No. 5 this year. Myerberg has been steadfast during the summer in suggesting that the Broncos will be one of the best teams in the country.
His top four are Ohio State, Baylor, Auburn and Alabama.
Earlier this summer, on a USA Today podcast, Myerberg was asked about the favorite to earn a New Year’s Six bowl berth out of the Group of Five conferences: “Well, it’s Boise State, obviously,” he said. “It’s Boise State yesterday, today and for as long as football exists – Boise State will be the favorite to claim this thing. Boise State is ridiculously good. They have a small hole at quarterback that they need to fill. They need to find a new running back. But otherwise they are an elite football team that is just going to destroy everything in its path like a bulldozer.”
Right next to today’s rankings, though, is this blog post from USA Today: “The 10 most overrated college football fan bases.”
Checking in at No. 5 is Bronco Nation.
“It’s remarkable to witness the inflated sense of self worth from fans of Boise State; a team playing in the Mountain West,” Mike Foss writes. “The team’s Wikipedia entry has a section titled ‘Constant Success.’ Wyoming, New Mexico, and Air Force are in your conference. It’s harder to fail than it is to succeed.”
If it’s any consolation, most of the top 10 involves some of the biggest brands in college football: Miami, Florida, Notre Dame, Florida State, USC, Oklahoma and Texas.

The Broncos camped on The Blue last night. It’s become an annual fall camp tradition.

Here is an interesting story from ESPN on the Oklahoma drill. Boise State has been using it for several years.
