Bronco Beat

Boise State football team opens at No. 24 in Coaches Poll

The Boise State football team landed at No. 24 in the preseason Amway Coaches Poll – the 14th straight season that the Broncos have made an appearance in one of college football’s major polls.

The Broncos received 190 points in voting after going 12-2 last season with Mountain West and Fiesta Bowl titles. They return 18 starters but lost their star quarterback and tailback.

Boise State is the only Group of Five team that received more than five points in voting. The others who received votes are Air Force (five), Louisiana Tech (five), Marshall (four), Utah State (four), Georgia Southern (two), Central Florida (one) and Cincinnati (one). Other Boise State opponents receiving votes were BYU (three) and Washington (one).

Washington coach Chris Petersen is a voter. Boise State coach Bryan Harsin isn’t.

The top of the poll goes Ohio State, TCU, Alabama, Baylor, Oregon.

Boise State was by far the lowest-ranked team that’s coming off a win in a New Year’s Six bowl. The others: 1. Ohio State, 2. TCU, 5. Oregon, 6. Michigan State, 17. Georgia Tech.

The Associated Press Top 25 will be released Aug. 23.
