Boise State WR Troy Ware sustains career-ending injury

Boise State senior wide receiver Troy Ware won’t play this season because of a torn anterior cruciate ligament sustained during spring ball, football coach Bryan Harsin said Saturday.

The injury has ended Ware’s college career. He’ll graduate this month and return home to California for surgery. He plans to train for the 2016 NFL Draft, Harsin said.

Ware made 12 catches for 150 yards and a touchdown last season. He was expected to contribute heavily this fall as the No. 4 wide receiver.

He grayshirted in 2010, redshirted in 2011 and played from 2012 to 2014. He isn’t eligible for another year of eligibility because this is the first time he has missed a season because of injury.

The injury leaves wide receiver depth as one of Harsin’s biggest concerns going into the fall, the coach said. The Broncos return their three starters but don’t have any other players with significant experience. Redshirt freshmen A.J. Richardson and Sean Modster played well in spring ball.

“The wide receiver depth, that’s a concern,” Harsin said. “We have to make sure that the guys that we have now, that they continue to improve, young guys step up and be ready to play and maybe some of these true freshmen coming in are going to have to be ready. That’s one area we’re going to have to really look at throughout the summer.”

The updated roster is below.

Harsin spoke to the media at Boise State’s auction to raise money for scholarships. The event is held once every two years and has averaged about $280,000 in proceeds since its inception in 1983.

Reporters were informed before Harsin spoke that he wouldn’t answer questions about quarterback Ryan Finley, the frontrunner for the starting job who was arrested last month on two misdemeanor charges.

Harsin on tailback Jay Ajayi sliding in the NFL Draft: “I’m disappointed for Jay. As a competitor you want to be up there, you want to be one of the first ones taken. But I’m excited for him. The stars or where you get drafted, it doesn’t matter. When you step on the football field, that’s all that matters. And he’s a player. I’ve been watching cutups from this last season and Jay did things for us that made us so much better. He’s a fantastic player and a very good young man. ... It’s his opportunity – take advantage of it. So how could you be disappointed and get drafted? Now he’s got to go to work. He’s got to go prove himself. This might be more fire for him – that’s great, take advantage of it.”
