Boise State RB transfer sought opportunity to showcase talent

Former Stanford tailback Kelsey Young decided to transfer to Boise State as he searched for a way to get noticed by the NFL, he said this week.

Young will arrive in June with one season of eligibility.

He has spent the past three seasons as part of a crowded backfield at Stanford. He was the Cardinal’s second-leading rusher last season (331 yards) and also has played some wide receiver.

“I really wanted an opportunity where I could really showcase what I can do for the NFL scouts,” he said. “... I thought it would be better if I went to a situation where I could work to be a more prominent player on the offense and it seems like Boise presents that opportunity for me to compete to do that.”

Young is the older brother of Boise State redshirt freshman tailback Cory Young.

Kelsey contacted the Broncos in January after talking to his brother about the team’s need for rushing production after Jay Ajayi left for the NFL.

“At the time, they were kind of hesitant,” Kelsey said. “They had some guys that were up and coming that they were excited about. ... There was definitely interest but I don’t think the scholarships were there.”

Young also spoke to Oklahoma State, Fresno State and briefly to Notre Dame (former Stanford and Boise State assistant Mike Sanford is there), he said.

But Boise State offered him a spot after losing tailbacks Charles Bertoli and Raymond Sheard.

“I’m just really excited to be a part of the Boise State family,” Young said. “My brother speaks highly about the team. I was able to go see the team play one of the games last year (vs. Louisiana). It seemed like a cool environment.”

Young (5-foot-10, 200 pounds) is completing his computer science degree at Stanford this spring. He will enroll in graduate school at Boise State.

He said he isn’t nervous at all about joining a new program.

“I really want to be a part of a team that has a lot going for them, and I never have a problem blending in with the locker room,” he said. “I’m really eager to get to know the teammates and get together this summer and try to start something that will be really beneficial to everyone in the fall.”
