Seven Boise State football players out for spring with injuries

The Boise State football team opened spring ball Monday with a crisp practice in the Caven-Williams Sports Complex. The media were able to watch 20 minutes of individual drills – periods that were fast-paced and notable for the lack of footballs hitting the ground as the quarterbacks and receivers worked together.

“I thought the flow went the way we wanted it to,” coach Bryan Harsin said. “We’ve still got to improve, but overall excited about today, excited about the energy, excited about how we came out there to practice and the mindset and excited to get to this film and see if what I saw out there live is what we see on tape.

“... All the quarterbacks came out and they were ready. The receivers and tight ends, they were ready to catch the ball. That was encouraging. If we can do that and we can have that type of tempo and we can have that type of execution on air, which we should, and that’s always the challenge, then that’s going to be a good day for us.”

The Broncos return to practice Wednesday. You can watch highlights from today above.

After practice, Harsin gave a rundown of who will be out or limited this spring because of injuries.

Out: S Chanceller James, LB Joe Provenzano, TE Holden Huff, TE Alec Dhaenens, OG Mario Yakoo, DT Robert Ash, DE Gabe Perez.

Limited: DT Armand Nance, OT Rees Odhiambo, RB Jeremy McNichols, DT Deuce Mataele, DT Sam McCaskill (out right now, will return soon), OL Sitini Kauvaka, WR D.J. Dean.

James, who tore an anterior cruciate ligament in November, is “much further along” with his rehab than he was after his first ACL injury, Harsin said.

Based on average rehab times for ACLs, James’ return likely would fall sometime around the first game. The rest of the injured players are expected to return for the summer conditioning program.

Harsin’s full media session can be viewed below.
