We’re counting down the days to the Boise State football team’s first spring practice with daily blog posts on players to watch. Spring ball begins Monday and ends April 13. The Spring Game is April 11 (5 p.m.).
2. S Dylan Sumner-Gardner
Sumner-Gardner was last year’s January enrollee who arrived with big hype as a top-100 recruit. He found a role as a backup safety and special-teamer but never made a significant impact.
He finished with 19 tackles and two pass breakups.
With safety depth an issue this spring, Sumner-Gardner slides into a first-team safety spot alongside senior returning starter Darian Thompson. Junior Chanceller James, the most experienced possible option to complement Thompson, is out at least until fall camp because of a torn anterior cruciate ligament.
“We think he should be the guy to win it,” defensive coordinator Marcel Yates said. “We’ll see if he can do it.”
