Bronco Beat

Boise State football team up one spot to No. 22 in College Football Playoff poll

The Boise State football team climbed one spot to No. 22 in the College Football Playoff Top 25 on Tuesday.

The Broncos are the only team from the Group of Five conferences in the Top 25. If they beat Fresno State on Saturday in the Mountain West football championship game (8 p.m., CBS), they almost certainly will get the spot in a New Year’s Six bowl reserved for the highest-ranked Group of Five champion.

If the Broncos (10-2) lose, they will be out of the running.

Boise State also is No. 22 in The Associated Press and Coaches polls.

The New Year’s Six bowls are the Fiesta, Cotton and Peach. The opponent likely would be a top-10 team.

Nationally, the playoff rankings are getting controversial. TCU moved up to No. 3, ahead of undefeated national champion Florida State at No. 4. That opens the possibility that No. 5 Ohio State or No. 6 Baylor could pass the Seminoles and bump them from the playoff field.
