The Boise State football team’s raucous crowd for the home opener helped the Broncos land an offensive line recruit.
Offensive tackle John Molchon of Faith Lutheran High in Las Vegas committed Tuesday. He attended Saturday’s game against Colorado State at Albertsons Stadium with his parents. He sat near the student section.
“The environment was crazy,” Molchon said. “I felt like it was an NFL game. It was astounding.”
Molchon (6-foot-5, 270 pounds) participated in the Broncos’ summer camp for prospects and was offered a scholarship. He had about 10 offers, mostly from Mountain West schools, he said. His final four were Boise State, Colorado State, Nevada and Fordham.
This was his first official visit and it was important for him to bring his mom, to help evaluate the non-football side of the decision.
“I know how great the football is at Boise State,” he said. “I got to know a lot more about Idaho, really.”
He plans to study business, engineering or pre-med.
“When I first went there, I knew all about the football and I didn’t know anything academically,” he said. “I thought that if I were to bring (my mom) it would help iron out all the things I wanted to know about the academics and stuff outside of football.”
Molchon played tight end as a freshman and fullback as a sophomore at Faith Lutheran. He moved to offensive tackle last season and became the Division I-A lineman of the year in Nevada and won a state title.
He also plays basketball. He didn’t play football until eighth grade.
“It’s obvious how athletic he is,” Faith Lutheran coach Vernon Fox told the Las Vegas Sun. “He moves really well for a big guy. You look at him and can see his frame has the potential for growth.”
