Boise State football's kicking tandem impresses in first week of fall camp

Boise State football coach Bryan Harsin was complimentary of senior kicker Dan Goodale and sophomore punter Sean Wale at his press conference Thursday night after the team’s closed scrimmage.

Both kicked the ball well in the scrimmage, Harsin said.

“Dan has done a good job leading that group and having those guys prepare when it comes their time to practice,” Harsin said.

Goodale was 17-of-19 on field goals and 57-of-60 on PATs last season.

Wale split the punting job last year with Trevor Harman. Wale averaged 41.5 yards and placed eight of his 21 kicks inside the 20-yard line. He is the only true punter on the roster. The kickers serve as the backups.

“The practices that we’ve had punt in, he gets a hold of it,” Harsin said. “He’s more consistent. He’s getting into a little bit of a rhythm and we’d like to keep that.”

Other notes:

— Walk-on offensive lineman Mike Miller of Portland has left the team. He joined the program last week.

— Backup quarterback Ryan Finley checked one play in the scrimmage about three times before figuring out the right call, Harsin said, but he got the ball snapped with 1 second left on the play clock and the play went for a nice gain.

— The Broncos practice tonight. Only 10 minutes is open to the media and there aren’t any interviews. We’ll have more coverage tomorrow with two partially open practices and interviews. Sunday is a no-access day.

— The old purple-and-gray Mountain West logos on the Albertsons Stadium field were painted blue and orange last year. They are back to purple and gray right now but will be replaced with blue and orange turf. The school also is adding the Albertsons Stadium name to the field.

— There is a Groupon deal available for tickets to the Boise State-Ole Miss game in Atlanta, a Chick-fil-A Kickoff Game. Tickets start at $45 in the lower level. Boise State sold about 1,800 tickets to the game at about $80 each. The school already has returned its leftover tickets to game officials. Boise State did not have a ticket requirement. It will receive $1.1 million for playing in the game (a $200,000 increase over the original deal to play at Ole Miss in 2011). Boise State received a school-record payout of $1.4 million for the 2011 Chick-fil-A game against Georgia and sent about 7,500 fans. Boise State also gets a $50,000 donation to its general scholarship fund for each Chick-fil-A appearance.

— I’ll be on KTIK at 3:20 p.m. today to talk Boise State football. You can listen live here.

— Dave Southorn and I will host a Boise State and college football live chat at 1 p.m. Thursday. You can sign up for a reminder below:
