Boise State football team adds 10 to roster

The Boise State football team added two wide receivers on the roster Friday.

Redshirt sophomore Chaz Anderson (5-foot-10, 182 pounds), previously a cornerback, has moved to wide receiver. He made 14 catches for 356 yards as a high school senior.

Arizona State transfer Rick Smith (5-9, 174) joined the team. Smith played the past two years for the Sun Devils. He’ll redshirt this year and have two years of eligibility remaining.

Cornerback Kevin Person of Los Angeles and Santa Monica (Calif.) High also was added as a late signee who joined the team over the summer.

The other eight newcomers are walk-ons. The list: kicker Blake Gonzalez (San Clemente, Calif.), offensive lineman Mike Miller (Portland), linebacker Joe Provenzano (Glendora, Calif.), wide receiver Josh Rhinehart (Fruitland High), defensive tackle Paul Semons (Eagle High), offensive lineman Jake Templeton (Timberline High), linebacker Leighton Vander Esch (Salmon River High) and cornerback Eric Yates (Capital High/College Station, Texas). Yates is the son of defensive coordinator Marcel Yates.

Some highlights from the newcomer bios, which are available here:

— Gonzalez: Earned four letters in football and three in lacrosse at San Clemente High. Touchbacks on 30 of 39 kickoffs last year. Was 5-for-6 on field-goal attempts with a long of 45. Also punted (33.7-yard average) and played on offense.

— Miller: Class 6A All-State selection at Jesuit High. Father, Dave, played at Oregon.

— Person: All-CIF Western Division defensive back at Santa Monica High. Team MVP. Five interceptions as a senior. (Interesting note: Person is quoted in this People story.)

— Provenzano: School-record 119 tackles last year. Also forced five fumbles. Defensive MVP at California Classic All-Star Game. From Ian Johnson’s high school.

— Rhinehart: All-conference wide receiver and linebacker. Second-team All-Idaho linebacker. Another member of Fruitland pipeline.

— Semons: First-team All-Idaho as a senior with five sacks.

— Templeton: Second-team All-SIC as a senior. Also played goalie for Timberline lacrosse.

— Vander Esch: Helped Salmon River win football and basketball state titles his junior and senior years. All-Idaho Player of the Year for 1A Division II as quarterback and linebacker.

— Yates: Recorded three interceptions in just three games at A&M Consolidated High in College Station, Texas. Previously attended Capital High. Did not play last year.

Some number changes: defensive end Kamalei Correa to No. 8, tight end Alec Dhaenens to No. 87, cornerback Cameron Hartsfield to No. 37, cornerback Mercy Maston to No. 9, quarterback Tommy Stuart to No. 3, punter Sean Wale to No. 19, kicker Tyler Rausa to No. 49, safety Brandon Brown to No. 17, wide receiver Dusty Fisher to No. 24, wide receiver A.J.
