The Chicago Cubs promoted Fruitland High graduate Joe Martarano on Sunday from their rookie-level Arizona League affiliate to the Eugene Emeralds of the short-season A Northwest League.
Martarano, the Cubs’ 22nd-round pick in 2014, was hitting .315 with 12 RBIs in 13 games in Arizona.
Emeralds manager Gary Van Tol, a Boise resident, had the second-year pro hit sixth and played first base for Eugene on Sunday. The game was in progress at press time.
Boise served as the Cubs’ Northwest League affiliate for 14 years until this season, when it switched to the Colorado Rockies. Eugene travels to Boise on Aug. 9-11 and 17-19. Boise State football camps opens Aug. 6.
