Idaho colleges roundup: Boise State opens soccer season at home

The Broncos host Idaho State at 5 p.m. Friday at the Boas Soccer Complex. Boise State returns nine starters from last year’s squad, including two All-Mountain West selections: Senior defender Hailey DeVries and junior forward Baylee Blaser (Mountain View High).

The Broncos, who finished sixth in the Mountain West last year, are 8-9-1 all-time in season openers, including 6-3-0 in season openers at home. Idaho State finished last in the Big Sky last season, and has 11 newcomers on this year’s roster.

The all-time series is tied 8-8-2.

BOISE STATE CROSS COUNTRY: The Broncos were voted second in the men’s and women’s Mountain West preseason polls. The Colorado State men and New Mexico women are projected to win the conference.

COLLEGE OF IDAHO VOLLEYBALL: The No. 11 Coyotes defeated the highest-ranked opponent in program history, defending NAIA national semifinalist and No. 4 Viterbo (Wis.), 21-25, 18-25, 28-26, 25-20, 15-13 on Thursday at the Red Lion-Anaheim Summer Slam in La Mirada, Calif. The C of I opened with a 23-25, 25-22, 25-23, 25-16 loss to the Master’s College.

C OF I MEN’S SOCCER: Carter Perry (Boise High) scored in the 58th minute to lift the Coyotes to a 1-0 season-opening victory over Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in Prescott, Ariz.

NORTHWEST NAZARENE VOLLEYBALL: The Crusaders were picked to finish third in a preseason vote of GNAC coaches. Western Washington was a unanimous pick to win the league.

NNU SOCCER: The men were picked to take fourth in the GNAC, while the women were eighth. The Simon Fraser men and Western Washington women are preseason favorites.
